A RECENT United States travel advisory is a major reason why Piarco International Airport remains relatively quiet even with the re-opening of the national borders.

The United States’ Department of State told its citizens in mid-June: “Do not travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to restricted travel options put in place to prevent Covid-19.”

That advisory was not revised after the local borders were opened.

The US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Note for T&T.

According to the CDC, there is “a very high level of Covid-19 in the country.”

The US authorities also re-stated previous warnings about a high incidence of crime in several communities.

In those areas, “violent crime, such as murder, robbery assault, sexual assault, home invasion and kidnapping, is common,” US citizens were told.

“Gang activity, such as narcotics trafficking is common. A significant portion of violent crime is gang-related.”

Major US airlines have not resumed flying to T&T.

Activities in and out of the national airports have been slow, partly because of the advisory from the US, which is a major travel market.

Certain other countries have also provided similar advice to their citizens.
