THE PROBLEM WITH ROWLEY’S CHOICE FOR TOP COP

THERE is a hitch with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley’s favoured candidate for Commissioner of Police to replace Gary Griffith.

Deputy Commissioner McDonald Jacob is almost 60 years old.

The relevant statute does not place an age limit on the appointment of a commissioner, but at age 60, Jacob is likely to have a limited term if he is appointed top cop.

Jacob was given a three-year post as deputy commissioner last April.

Before applying for the job of deputy commissioner, he had planned to take early retirement.

He said he was persuaded by family members to seek the job.

He heads the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), which was set up after disbandment of the National Operations Centre.

Jacob had previously worked for 25 years in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Born at Princes Town, he joined the service at age 18.

He has a masters of philosophy degree in criminology and criminal justice.

He is the father of three.
