COMEDIENNE Nikki Crosby has added a well-known – and well-liked – face to the number of people who are seeking to leave Trinidad and Tobago in light of the social and economic challenges.
A large number of people are aiming to migrate to the United States, Canada, Britain or other countries as a result of the steep decline in the economy, loss of jobs, and other issues that are affecting the quality of life.
Bankers, real estate agents and other relevant professionals are confirming anecdotal evidence of a planned exodus over a period of time.
Some are leaving their properties in the hands of realtors.
The migration pattern is being likened to the 1980s, when thousands of people left T&T after the collapse of the economy and in the midst of political and social turmoil.
Some were accepted in Canada as economic refugees.
The Canadian authorities have since made the refugee system more stringent, but are permitting a large number of permanent residents.
A number of T&T nationals with Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) status are awaiting word from Canadian Immigration to travel to that North American country.
Many people are complaining about a lack of opportunities and a sense of despair.
The forced closures of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses and informal commercial operations have added to the economic difficulties.
Migration statistics are not easily available, but word from a variety of sources confirms the major trend.
A flight of capital and a brain drain result from mass migrations.
In announcing her imminent departure from Trinidad and Tobago, Crosby groused that “nothing is happening and I feel stifled right now.”
She stressed her love for T&T.
