IS THIS T&T AT 60?

MAYBE we should not expect much since the government came up with a 60th independence anniversary plan as a hurried afterthought.

Jamaica, in contrast, spent months in careful planning, the result of which is a schedule of events that represents the distinctiveness of that remarkable Caricom sister.

Since Trinidad and Tobago touts our diversity, where in the independence celebrations are Minshall’s artistry, Chang’s renowned talent, Naipaul’s acclaimed literature, Hingwan’s genius?

What about appreciation of the unique contributions of C.L.R. James, Rudranath Capildeo, Daisy Voisin, and Hasely Crawford?

In a land in which the rich is getting richer (read the latest financial reports of publicly-traded companies), where are the inspiring tribute sessions to successful sole trader entrepreneurs, innovators, and exporters?

What about motivational projects at our universities in honour of youth achievers, including Fulbright and other scholars who are succeeding in a sea of falling standards?

Is this how our independence leaders pictured T&T at 60?

But then again, wine-and-jam has always been the panacea of the people.

If only David Rudder was still commenting on our national condition…
