CRISIS-RIDDEN Caracas, capital city of Venezuela, has a better global positioning than Port of Spain. 

Caracas, with a population of two million and with raging gun battles among gangs, is better placed with respect to all-round quality of life than Trinidad and Tobago’s capital city. 

When several key aspects of life are tabulated, Caracas is rated overall at 58th in the world, according to Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) latest report. 

The study is possibly the most comprehensive in the world, with exhaustive examination by a wide number of experts, and clinical analyses by some of the globe’s most respected professionals in various fields. 

With respect to personal security, Caracas stands at 57 in the world. 

In digital and infrastructure security, Caracas is at 59, and is at 60 on health security, and 55 on environmental security. 

The Venezuelan capital did not make in the environmental security listing. 

Port of Spain is not listed in any category. 

EIU rates the top 60 cities in each field. 

In the overall rating, the top cities are (in order), Copenhagen, Toronto, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo. 

Sydney is listed as number one in digital security, followed by Singapore, Copenhagen, Los Angeles and Francisco. 

The top cities in health security are (in order) Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Osaka. 

With regard to infrastructure security, Hong Kong, Singapore, Copenhagen, Toronto and Tokyo are the top cities. 

Copenhagen was listed as tops with respect to personal security, followed by Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Stockholm and Brussels. 

The top-rated cities pertaining to environmental security are (in order) Wellington, Toronto, Washington DC, Bogota and Milan. 

EIU said it considered 76 matters related to all aspects of urban safety and grouped them into the five overall pillars. 

The organisation provided detailed explanations on each category. 

Independent reports have revealed a high incidence of armed robberies, kidnappings, housebreakings, stolen vehicles and drug-dealing in Caracas.
