AT a time when the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament is debating a cannabis law, there is new scientific finding about the dangers of using the herb.
A study led by researchers of Toronto, Canada, found that cannabis use is associated with a higher risk of heart attacks, especially for frequent users.
The study found that cannabis users under age 45 were twice to have a heart attack than non-users.
The investigation surveyed 33,000 people aged 18 to 44 who used cannabis within the past 30 days.
One of the study’s authors, a clinical scientist, said: “It is something important that health care professionals need to be aware of and counsel patients on.”
There was an earlier study that found a link between heavy cannabis use and heart attacks.
The latest study stressed that frequent use cause the risk of heart attacks, while occasional use was associated with “elevated, albeit non-significant” risk.
The T&T Parliament is deliberating on a law that would permit the setting up of a local cannabis industry, from farming to pharmaceuticals.
